WHAT IS THE CASE OF RADON?

In the Korean media (Korea Herald, Korea Times, Korea Bizwire, 13 July, 2018 etc.) appeared news articles reporting that overseas purchased latex products emits radon, which is a carcinogenic agent.

This triggered alarm bells for Korean customers, resulting in Korean cus-tomers not buying radon-contaminated latex products anymore overseas.

    WHAT IS RADON ACTUALLY?

Radon is a chemical element with the symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless, noble gas.

It occurs naturally in minute quantities as an intermediate step in the normal radioactivity decay chains, through which Thorium and Uranium slowly decay into lead and various other short-lived radioactive elements. Radon itself is the immediate decay product from Radium.

Radon is, under normal conditions, gaseous and easily inhaled. Radon gas is considered a health hazard. Being exposed to Radon for a long time, it will become a carcinogenic agent.

    WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

Extracted latex sap is graded according to its precise technical parameters, such as its dirt content, ash content and natural properties of the rubber.

The liquid latex is traded as a commodity, with the lower grade sap used in the manufac-turing of various items, such as, tires, shoes and gloves.

Meanwhile, higher grade liquid latex, which is hypoallergenic, is used to produce premi-um products, such as latex mattresses and pillows.

The main reason for large price differences among latex mattresses is due to the pres-ence of latex fillers.

To lower the cost of production, certain latex manufacturers (Daijin Bed Co and some other latex manufacturers) may add latex fillers, such as Talcum, Chalk, Chalcid, Tita-nium dioxide.

The addition of latex fillers has a negative effect on the durability of the mattress, making it prone to sagging and breakdown and ultimately reducing the lifespan of the mattress.

What differentiates one latex manufacturer from another is whether vigorous quality stan-dards and measures were put in place to ensure that safe and reliable products are pro-duced.

The concentration of Radon in latex is linked to the use of fillers like Chalcid (Chalk) that is polluted with Uranium.

Gols and Eco are a few of the most renowned certification institutions, and both have stringent renewal policies to ensure that latex manufacturing companies are constantly up to standards.

Natural latex production is a complex and costly process. Hence, the alarms bells in your head should ring if a latex mattress is priced too cheaply.

Quality latex foam boasts a milky, vanilla scent, give the mattress a few good whiffs before you purchase it!

Check the quality of the latex mattress and pillow to ensure that it is certified toxic free.

Here applies an old adage: a cheap latex mattress comes at a (health) price
